1) Create a list of 10 or so ideal organisations you'd love to work for
Ask your network, friends and family for introductions to people who work there.
Meet each of these people for a 30 minute conversation.
In each one, ask:
What do you like most about your job?
What don't you like?
What has surprised you?
AND (very important!)
Who else do you suggest I speak to?
During and after the interview, ask yourself?
Do I like this person?
Can I see myself becoming them in future?
Maintain these relationships by keeping in touch in a way that feels natural to you, in your cultural and work context.
2) Aim to plant one seed per day
Job hunting is hard work. Pace yourself and try to do one practical, outward facing thing per day.
A conversation with someone under point 1
A post online
A catch-up coffee
But perhaps most importantly:
3) Before sending any applications, get clarity for yourself: What does my ideal job look like?
What do I want to be doing all day?
Who do I want to work with?
What gives me energy? What drains me?
What kind of organisation do I want to work for?
What kind of work do I want to create for myself?
What is it I want - or need - to learn to get there?
This sort of thinking at the start can help you to focus your efforts in a direction that aligns with your own values and aspirations.
